UPS Completes Phase I of Worldport Expansion
UPS recently completed the Phase I expansion of its advanced air packaging sorting hub, Worldport, which company officials said will increase its capacity 15 percent from 304,000 to 350,000 packages per hour. Full Worldport operations kicked off on July 7. Phase I came in both under budget and ahead of schedule, with the company spending less than the anticipated $1 billion for the expansion and opening a month earlier than planned for in the three-year construction schedule.

Features of the UPS Worldport include: high-speed conveyors and "smart labels" read by overhead cameras that facilitate the processing of documents and small packages; automated equipment and overall process improvements that reduce the amount of time employees spend lifting and lowering packages while reducing the average package cycle-sorting span; IT systems that rapidly transmit Customs information to expedite the movement of international shipments; and specially designed docks and hub floors that let staffers easily move package containers from one area of the building to another.

New UPS Sustainability Report Sets Carbon Reduction Goal
In a significant move that once again demonstrates its environmental leadership, UPS has adopted a plan to cut the carbon emissions of its airline by an additional 20 percent by 2020, for a cumulative reduction of 42 percent since 1990.

The goal is laid out in the latest edition of UPS's Sustainability Report. The report shows that UPS's airline already is a leader in fuel efficiency in the package delivery sector, with an efficiency factor of 1.42 CO2 pounds per Available Ton Mile.

UPS intends to achieve its 2020 airline goals by investing in more fuel-efficient aircraft types and engines; fuel-saving operational initiatives, and the introduction of biofuels.

Ridethisbike.comCustomer Chronicles
Ridethisbike.com Gears for Growth

In 2005, lifelong cycling enthusiast Larry Lagarde came to a realization. His love of cycling and constant travel required a bicycle that was portable, yet durable and of quality construction. As he considered all of the options that were then available, none of them met all the requirements he was seeking. Larry realized that his best option was to build the ideal portable bicycle himself, and went to work. Partnering with a local bicycle manufacturer, Larry helped design a new bicycle model. It quickly sold out, and Larry was suddenly the owner of a new business.

Since then, Ridethisbike.com has grown into one of the most successful sellers of portable bicycles in the country. Thousands of customers have come to realize the convenience and usefulness that folding bicycles offer. They are ideal for RV and apartment dwellers that don't have a lot of space or are concerned with theft. They also allow workers a healthy, environmentally friendly method of commuting.

Larry is currently running the business out of his home, and because of continued success and growth, he has plans to move to a more prominent retail location in the near future. He is constantly researching new designs, going to trade shows, and monitoring his inventory. Like most small business owners, he doesn't have time to worry about his shipping. For the past year, Larry has trusted this crucial part of his business to Unishippers, and the results have been outstanding.

After his previous carrier lost several bicycles, a frustrated Larry was referred to his local Unishippers office, and decided to give them a try. "I was impressed with Unishippers' service from the very start," he recalls. "I have never regretted my decision to ship with them. The service is consistent and consistently good."

The unique shipping needs of Larry's business run the gamut from large folding bicycles to small overnight packages. Regardless of the shipment type, Unishippers has delivered. "From express to freight, Unishippers does a terrific job," says Larry. "The pricing is great, but the personal relationship is what keeps me shipping. My local office did a lot of research for me regarding international shipments. The time they put in was just really impressive and definitely above and beyond. I just feel like Unishippers knows me and my business, and is always looking for ways to save me money."

The time and expense that Larry's relationship with Unishippers saves him means he can spend more time focused on his core business. As his company's sales and product line continue to grow, so will its need for a trusted, reliable shipping advisor. "Unishippers is absolutely great to do business with," Larry states. "The service is consistently excellent, and the personnel are exceptional. I look forward to many years of great shipping with them."

Shipping with the Best:
UPS and Unishippers

Through its relationship with UPS, Unishippers offers numerous advantages to its customers. They can be confident that when they ship with us, they are getting the best possible combination of service and value.

When the performance of UPS, FedEx® and USPS is compared in several categories, including reliability, technology, speed and several others, the results are clear: UPS is the winner across the board.

Reliability
In an October 2008 survey, Parcel magazine asked shippers to rate the three carriers in the vital categories of on-time service, delivery performance and customer service.

UPS was rated first in all three categories. These results demonstrate the confidence that customers around the world place in UPS and their impeccable reliability and support.

Technology
UPS is known for going to great lengths to maintain and improve its technological prowess. The company has introduced several innovative solutions to make its customers' shipping experience as trouble-free as possible. UPS's ability to identify and implement technology solutions is just one more thing that sets them apart from the other carriers.

UPS is the first and only carrier that offers a web-enabled system that allows customers to intercept packages before they are delivered. UPS Delivery InterceptSM has proven invaluable to thousands of customers who have had a sudden need arise to hold, return or redirect a package.

Another industry first from UPS is UPS Returns®, which offers efficient international returns to 98 countries. This innovative new returns option helps customers expand into new markets worldwide while enhancing customer service and visibility.

Speed
When it comes to getting your packages delivered where you want and when you want, UPS is the industry standard. They deliver overnight packages to more businesses and more ZIP codes than any other carrier. Most major metro cites have guaranteed delivery starting at 8 a.m.

International shipments through UPS enjoy the same service advantage. UPS delivers earlier to more countries from the U.S. than FedEx, providing 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. delivery to major cities across Europe, Asia and Canada.

Whether it's reliability, technology or speed, UPS offers clear advantages versus competing carriers. Unishippers is proud to offer UPS's exceptional express and ground service to its customers.

UPS: What U Need to Know

Unishippers' relationship with UPS is constantly evolving and improving. Below are several UPS-related updates for Unishippers customers:

Contact Your Local Unishippers Office
One important part of the value that Unishippers offers is the enhanced customer service that we are able to provide. In the rare event that you have an issue with your UPS shipping, please contact your local Unishippers office rather than calling UPS directly. The support staff at your local office knows your business and your needs, and is ready and able to help you resolve any issues regarding your UPS account.

Cancel Non-Tendered Labels
UPS has recently phased out SBB (scan-based billing). This means that any non-tendered packages that are not voided in Express Manager will get billed. Please make sure to void shipments at the end of the day that you do not intend to ship to avoid unnecessary expenses.

UPS End-User HazMat Training Available
If you or your company ever ship hazardous materials, a UPS Dangerous Goods Seminar can be a great way to receive the most current information available on proper shipping and handling of hazardous materials through the UPS ground and air network.

Professional dangerous goods instructors at the seminar provide you with necessary regulatory information to ensure that your business complies with the latest government regulations pertaining to shipping procedures and employee training.

According to UPS, those who should consider attending one of these seminars include:

  • A manager directly supervising shipping and/or receiving of dangerous goods
  • An employee responsible for preparing hazardous materials packages for transportation
  • A member of the health and safety and/or environmental compliance staff inspecting dangerous goods packages prepared for transportation

For more information, dates and locations, and to register call UPS's reservation hotline at 800.634.5656 or visit www.seeuthere.com/upsseminars2.

Insurance: When Does it Make Sense?

Some of the most common questions from Unishippers customers deal with insurance. When does it make sense to purchase it? When is it better to pass on it? Here are a few guidelines to assist you in the decision-making process.

First, keep in mind that all UPS shipments are automatically protected up to a value of $100. Consider purchasing Declared Value insurance for both domestic and international shipments when you are shipping delicate, expensive or irreplaceable items. Insurance is typically not necessary on solid, heavy items with little chance of being damaged during shipment. With Declared Value, a customer can request protection up to $50k per package, except for:

  • Packages shipped via a drop box have a max of $500
  • International shipments containing jewelry have a max of $500
  • Packages shipped via a returns services have a max of $1000
  • Packages shipped via Shipper Release service have a max of $999
  • There is no Declared Value service on Prepaid Labels

The cost is $0.65 for each $100 (or portion of $100) of the total value declared, with a minimum charge of $1.95. Your local Unishippers office will be happy to help you determine if purchasing insurance makes sense for your shipping needs.
