Ted Arnoldus
The Freedom of Franchise Ownership
As a Unishippers franchise owner, Ted Arnoldus has found his dream job. But it’s not the same dream that he started out with when he graduated from college in 1999. At that time, Ted wanted to be a brand manager for Proctor and Gamble. “I thought that would be the coolest job in the world,” he says.
Ted didn’t get that job, but he landed sales-related positions with other big companies and achieved success. But something was always missing for him – he wanted to control his own future.
Fortunately, the opportunity came up for Ted to own his own Unishippers franchise. It was a natural fit for Ted. He had worked as a sales manager for the Unishippers San Diego office, where he achieved platinum sales status for two years in a row. He decided that becoming a Unishippers franchise owner was something that fit into his background and played to his strengths.
But Ted has discovered that business ownership isn’t without its challenges. He says 2009 was a difficult year, but 2010 is looking much brighter. And he’s learned that it’s best to diversify and not just to rely on one revenue stream. Focusing on converting much of his business to small package needs has worked well for him.
Also, Ted emphasizes the value of meeting one-on-one with the customer. He sees it as one of the best strategies for recruiting and maintaining clients. “I hit the streets, meet with customers and get them to move to Unishippers. The business owner needs to always stay close to the ground.”
Despite the difficulties he has faced, Ted believes in the Unishippers system and ultimately hopes to quadruple the size of his business. “It is a ton of work, but it’s very rewarding. This is my career. This is my future. This is my retirement.”
